TD Union Station
Generative Art
Float4 designed, produced, and integrated generative artistic content at TD Bank’s Union Station branch in downtown Toronto. The objective was to create an exciting, soothing and inspiring visual experience for commuters and bank customers alike.
TD commissioned Float4 to create eye-catching content inspired by Union Station. The train station is one of the most-traveled transit hubs in Canada and has been designated a national historic site since 1975.
Our team therefore designed a content piece that pays homage to journeys. The result was a compelling parallax effect of a train traversing Ontario’s diverse landscapes, taking viewers across scenic countrysides, urban landscapes, and vast nature views.
The content is displayed on a large 12” x 6” LED screen installed at the branch’s entrance. The imagery, hosted on a singular 8K Realmotion™ server, evolves in sync with real-time weather conditions and seasonal changes.
The generative components evolve based on different data sources: for example, weather elements are connected through a weather API and will reflect conditions in real time while lighting and colors are programmed to change based on the time of day. This helps to create a more dynamic experience that both informs viewers of weather conditions outside Union Station and elicits a joyful response.
To simplify the user experience, Float4 also built a custom CMS for the TD team so that they can manually edit and upload alternate media. The CMS also allows them to control certain elements of the landscape journey and build a content schedule based on their needs.
